Buffering issues
Ok, so I had it installed to a 4gb USB drive, and this week it ran out of space, wouldn't save any more library updates. Well, the menus were really laggy and ticking the wife off, so I figured I'd go ahead and install to the hard drive.

The good news - the menus are much zippier. Yay.

The bad news - I'm getting a LOT of issues with loading video files. As soon at they start, after loading for several seconds, it pauses and we get the "Buffering xx%" message. Usually, after it buffers to 100% (sometimes a few seconds, sometimes minutes) it will play lawlessly. Sometimes it will continue to buffer.
I searched and found this topic and tried renaming the shares to use the IP, but it didn't really help much. http://forum.stmlabs.com/showthread.php?tid=1414

Wired network 10/100. No issues before the hard drive install. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Joe

RE: Buffering issues
I ran Top via SSH and saw that I was at 99% CPU, so I figured that might be the problem. So I followed Kraq's advice and disable the common plugin cache add-on and updated advanced settings to disable ddsfanart. And now the cpu is hovering around 15-20% while idle. But the buffering issue is still there.
If this was my first taste of it, it wouldn't be as frustrating, but since there was no buffering via USB it's really confounding.

RE: Buffering issues
strange. post a debug log to pastebin. the only reason for buffering is slow data consumption over the network, not cpu. high cpu will cause choppy playback, but not buffering.

RE: Buffering issues
i normally only get buffering issues when my network is being stressed. multiple torrents downloading/uploading, facebooks games running, uploading to youtube, watching youtube videos etc etc. basically when the router is under heavy load

RE: Buffering issues
Yeah, ubuntuaddicted, that's the weird thing. I shouldn't have had any network traffic today. No downloads. Connected to the office VPN, but no serious activity, etc. And yet - buffering almost everything.
But this evening, no issues to speak of.
I'll keep an eye on it, and if it comes back, I'll debug/pastebin it.
Thanks kraqh3d!
